A practical checklist for driver age, licence documents, second drivers, insurance choices and the information that should be confirmed before a Chania or Crete rental.
Driver age: start with the vehicle you are actually eligible to rent
The standard minimum driver age for this rental service is 21. That is the starting point, not a guarantee that every specialist or larger vehicle is available to every 21-year-old driver. Vehicle-specific eligibility can still apply.
When you request a quote, enter the real driver age rather than choosing a car first and expecting the eligibility check to happen at the desk. This is especially important for larger people carriers, SUVs and other vehicle types where availability and underwriting rules can differ.
If more than one person will drive, the second driver must also meet the applicable requirements. A second eligible driver can be added free of charge, but “free” does not mean the driver can remain undeclared.
Driving licence: use the valid original document
The driver should carry a valid original driving licence suitable for the vehicle being rented. A photo, scan or number typed into a message is not a substitute for the original document at pickup.
The name and identity information should correspond with the person who is actually signing and driving. If the licence has restrictions or unusual categories, mention that before arrival rather than waiting until handover.
International Driving Permit: when to ask before travel
Whether an International Driving Permit is needed can depend on the country that issued the driving licence, the document format and the rules that apply to that licence in Greece. Because licences differ by country, do not rely on a generic “everyone needs one” or “nobody needs one” statement.
If your licence is issued outside a straightforward EU/EEA-style context, uses a non-Latin script, or you are unsure whether it is directly valid for driving in Greece, ask for document confirmation before travel. An IDP is normally an accompaniment to the original licence, not a replacement for it.
Documents and information that make pickup smoother
Bring the required identity document, the valid original driving licence and any additional driving permit that has been confirmed as necessary. Have the rental reference and the contact details used for the booking available.
For Chania Airport pickup, send the flight number before travel. For hotel/villa delivery, provide the exact accommodation. For ferry pickups or returns, give the relevant port and realistic handover time.
Second driver: free, but still formally included
A second eligible driver can be included without an extra daily driver fee. The important part is that the second person is declared and accepted under the rental agreement before driving.
Insurance conditions depend on authorised use of the vehicle. Do not treat “free second driver” as permission for an unlisted person to drive.
Insurance, excess and no-deposit policy are separate concepts
Basic CDW is included in the rental rate. Optional FDW is +€12 per rental day and reduces the excess to zero for covered damage, subject to the stated exclusions.
No rental security deposit is blocked on a credit card. That deposit policy is separate from the insurance excess. A no-deposit rental can still have a CDW excess unless FDW or another confirmed insurance arrangement changes it.
Tyres/wheels, underside, off-road use, traffic-law violations and other stated exclusions should not be assumed covered simply because FDW is selected.
Before you fly: seven things to confirm in writing
Confirm the pickup and return locations, both dates and times, the car type, transmission, driver eligibility, insurance option and total quoted price. If a one-way or delivery fee applies, it should be visible as part of the booking terms.
If an exact model is essential, ask whether that exact model is confirmed. Model examples on the site describe the requested type and may be replaced with a similar equivalent unless specific confirmation says otherwise.
Keep the quote specific. The useful combination is dates + times + exact pickup/return points + car type + driver age + insurance + passenger/luggage details. That gives enough information to check the right vehicle and return a useful date-specific quote instead of a vague “best price” estimate.
