When one-way is worth considering
The clearest case is an open-jaw itinerary: land in Chania, travel gradually east, then fly or sail from Heraklion. Returning to Chania only to hand over the car can add significant backtracking and require another transfer east.
A one-way route may carry an additional location charge, so compare the complete trip rather than assuming same-location return is always cheaper overall.
Airport versus port return in Heraklion
Choose HER Airport when the trip ends with a flight and Heraklion Port when it ends with a ferry. They are separate return points and should be quoted correctly from the start.
If the exact onward schedule is known, include the realistic vehicle handover time rather than only the flight or ferry departure time.
